The third major factor is cathode fouling:
Since the cathode undergoes a reduction reaction, it will reduce the metal ions in the electrolyte to form cathode scale and adhere to the cathode. As the electrolysis progresses, the distance between the electrodes gradually becomes smaller, and then electrical corrosion occurs.
